Bolivar, Mo. - The Southwest Baptist University put together a complete game against #7 Central Missouri on Saturday evening in Bolivar, upsetting the Jennies 63-52. The Bearcats played a solid all-around game to move to 11-14 (6-11 MIAA).
The Bearcats trailed by a small margin early, but the UCM lead would last for long. After being down 2-6 to start the game the Bearcats went on a 7-1 run to take their first lead of the ballgame at 9-7 with 16:01 left in the first half. The Bearcats and Jennies would go back-and-forth for the next nine minutes of the first half before the Bearcats would take the lead for good at 18-16 with 7:48 left in the first half. The Bearcats would slowly continue to build upon their lead, going up 10 (30-20) off of a
Brittney Dukes free throw before taking a 32-22 lead going into the break.
Coming out of halftime the Bearcats continued to push, going up 12 (36-24) off of a Dukes Jumper early in the second half. Central Missouri would fight and cut the lead back to four (36-32) before SBU went on a 7-2 run to go up 43-34 with 13:13 left in the game. SBU would get their lead back to double digits quickly, and go up 13 (49-36) off of a Dukes free throw with 11:38 left in the contest. SBU would not let the lead fall back under 10 for the remainder of the game, pushing it as high as 19 (63-44) before going on to a 63-52 victory.
Jacqui Zelenka and
Brittney Dukes continue to lead the way for the Bearcats. Zelenka once again had another double-double, giving SBU a team high 18 points while pulling down 10 rebounds, as Dukes had 17 points, 8 assists, and 6 rebounds.
Brook Duncan added 9 points off of the bench, while
Chasity Prince had 6 points and 7 rebounds. As a team SBU shot 45.5% from the field, 26.7% from beyond the arc, and 81.8% from the free throw line. The Bearcats held the Jennies to 33.3% shooting from the field, and out-rebounded UCM 38-22.
"Really proud of our total team effort tonight," head coach Todd Voss stated after the win. "We have two really good seniors in
Chasity Prince and
Brittney Dukes and it's great to sen them out in their last regular season home game with a great performance and win. Our focus and determination on both ends was outstanding."
SBU will take a week off before returning to action for the final regular season game of year when they travel to Missouri Western on Saturday, March 2. Tip-off from St. Joseph, Missouri is set for 1:30 p.m.
