Bolivar, Mo. - The Southwest Baptist University baseball team continued their winning ways on Wednesday afternoon, sweeping Truman State 3-2 and 13-4 to move to 4-1 (4-1 MIAA) on the season.
In game one the Bearcats jumped on the scoreboard first. In the bottom of the first inning after a
Ross Wolfe walk and a
Drew Miller single, Bo Hesel hit a sacrifice fly to left field to bring home Wolfe and give SBU a 1-0 lead.
Truman State responded with runs in the second and the third before to up 1-2 before the Bearcats battled back. In the bottom of the fourth inning, the Bearcats loaded the bases with two outs for
Zach Pirrello. Pirrello drew a four-pitch walk to tie the game up at 2-2, followed by an
Aaron Anderson rbi single to give SBU the 3-2 lead.
Zach Winchester finished out his complete game effort, working out of a couple of jams late in the game, as SBU went on to a 3-2 game one victory. Winchester threw a complete game, allowing two runs (one earned) off of six hits while striking out five.
In game two the Bulldogs pulled ahead early, leading 0-4 after two innings. The Bearcats continued to battle, busting the game open in the bottom of the third inning. Wolfe led the inning off with an infield single, followed by a Miller walk. After a wild pitch, Hesel singled to bring home Wolfe. Two batters later,
Landon Young hit an rbi single, followed by a three-run homerun from
Kyle Jochems to put the Bearcats up 5-4. With runners on the corners, Wolfe picked up his second hit in the inning when he hit a double down the right field line to bring home Anderson and Pirrello and put SBU up 7-4.
The Bearcats extended their lead in the bottom of the fifth when Wolfe hit his second double of the game, bringing home Pirrello and
Jarod Robillard to put the Bearcats up 9-4. Miller then hit a double of his own, bringing home Wolfe, to give SBU a 10-4 lead.
SBU would add another run in the bottom of the sixth off of a Pirrello sacrifice fly to go up 11-4. Then in the seventh, after a leadoff single from Miller, Helsel tripled to right center to put SBU up 12-4. The Bearcat tacked on one more run when Blacksher hit a sacrifice fly one batter later. The Bearcats would go on to a 13-4 game two victory.
The SBU bullpen pitched outstanding, going 7.1 innings between four different relievers while allowing no runs. Pirrello went 4-4 in game two, while both Miller and Wolfe picked up three hits a piece. The Bearcats collected 18 hits in the game two victory.
