SBU Men Notch First Conference Win, 96-93 over Nebraska-Kearney

Bolivar, Mo. - The Southwest Baptist men's basketball team hosted the University of Nebraska-Kearney in the second game of conference play Saturday afternoon at the Meyer Sports Center. The Bearcats started off steady and going into the first media timeout had a marginal (10-7) lead. After a grueling matchup in the post the Bearcats were up six (42-36) to the UNK Lopers at the half. The second half was statistically evenly matched and saw SBU ending up on to with 96-93 victory.

It was evident from the start we were going to have another intense conference matchup on our hands. The Bearcats and Lopers post play was showcased early on as SBU saw themselves up only one point at the 9:57 mark in the first half. Physical post play from the high flying Desi Barmore helped SBU stay ahead of UNK 28-24 with 4:52 left in the first half. The Bearcats rounded out the first half with a 42-36 lead.

The Bearcats managed to maintain the halftime lead by continuing the solid post play and driving the ball to the basket from the perimeter. SBU exploded the next five minutes increasing the lead to double digits (72-59) and went into the second media timeout with an exclamation dunk by Desi Barmore. The game tightened with five minutes to play as the UNK Lopers closed the gap to seven (84-77). In the end SBU was able to evade the Lopers late staged comeback and run down the clock on their way to their first conference win of the season 96-93.

Senior Rashaad Brown-Peterson continues to thrive this season as he led the Bearcats with a game high 29 points shooting 52% from the field and 50% from three-point range. Co-starring in tonight's game was Derrick Stewart with another solid shooting night scoring 22 points; while Afam Obukwelu had a team high 11 rebounds on the night. The Bearcats shot 55% from the field, 37.5% from beyond the arc, and 65.6% from the free throw line.

The Bearcats are back in action on Saturday December 14, as they host William Jewel at the Meyer Sports Center in a double header for the men and women basketball teams. The SBU women are set to tip off at 5:30 p.m. and the men will follow at 7:30 central standard time.
