Bolivar, Mo. - In a quick break from MIAA play, the Southwest Baptist University women's basketball team took care of business against Avila, winning handily by a final score of 104-52. The Bearcats had six players score in double figures as every player on the active roster scored points for the Bearcats.
SBU took no time in setting the pace for the game, quickly jumping out to a 13-0 lead four minutes into the contest. SBU continued to push their lead, taking a 24-5 lead halfway through the first half, and cruised into halftime with a 47-20 lead.
In the second half the Bearcats picked right where they left off. After holding a 30 point advantage for the first 10 minutes of the second half, SBU continued to pull away in the final ten minutes, claiming the 104-52 victory.
The Bearcats had six players in double figures, led by
Jacqui Zelenka who recorded a double-double with 15 points and 13 rebounds.
Mackenzie Skupa had a team high 16 points to go along with 9 boards, while
Brook Duncan (15), Leann Lansdown (14),
Tanis Spani (13), and
Lissette Plasencia (12) all were in double-figures.
As a team the Bearcats shot 56.7% from the field, 40.9% from beyond the arc, and 73.1% from the free throw line. The Bearcats forced 14 turnovers and out-rebounded the Eagles 54-27. The 104 points scored by the Bearcats were the most points scored since the 2007-08 season when they defeated Missouri Baptist 104-75.
The Bearcats will return to MIAA play on Monday, January 6 when they host Fort Hays State. Tip-off is set for 5:30 p.m. from the Meyer Sports Center in Bolivar.
