Bolivar, Mo. - The Southwest Baptist men's basketball team hosted Missouri Baptist University of the NAIA in a nonconference game Tuesday night at the Meyer Sports Center. The Bearcats started off the game showcasing their three point shooting as SBU jumped out to a marginal 14-12 lead going into the first media timeout. The Bearcats held the advantage at the half 49-34 and continued to hold on in the second half forcing 11 turnovers on the night to help the Bearcats take down the Spartans 93-65.
The SBU Men took the lead early on in a battle that showcased two of Missouri's Baptist Universities. The Bearcats leaned on the three point shooting from senior leader
Rashaad Brown-Peterson and a 6-6 start from behind the arc from junior
Derrick Stewart to start off the game. The Bearcats had a marginal 23-18 lead with 9:54 left to play in the first half. Aggressive man to man defense helped them extend the lead to double digits (37-25) with 4:59 until half. SBU finished the first half with stellar team rebounding holding Missouri Baptist to only one second chance point in the last five minutes. The SBU men went into the half with a 15 point (49-34) lead.
The second half got off to a sloppy start for both teams, but the Bearcats managed to maintain their first half lead at 59-46. SBU began to slowly increase their lead as SBU lead 70-52 with a 12-6 run going into the second media timeout of the half. The Bearcats began to run away with the game and that is largely contributed from the 50 points coming from great bench play throughout the game. The Bearcats extended their win streak to five wins as they gained momentum going into conference with a 93-65 victory.
Junior
Derrick Stewart lit it up off the bench in Meyer Sports Center as he led the Bearcats with a career high 23 points shooting 6-11 from the 3 point line and 1-2 from the free throw line.
Desi Barmore had a game high 8 rebounds on the night. The Bearcats forced the Spartans to commit 20 turnovers, while shooting 51.8% from the field, 39.3% from beyond the arc, and 66.7% from the free throw line.
The Bearcats are back in action on Thursday December 5, as they begin conference play against Washburn in Bolivar, Missouri. The SBU Men are set to tip off at 7:30 p.m. central standard time.
