Box Score Bolivar, Mo. - The Southwest Baptist men's basketball team hosted William Jewell College in a nonconference game Saturday night at the Meyer Sports Center. After a fast paced first half the SBU Bearcats saw themselves down one in a close matchup to the Cardinals of William Jewell (47-48). The second half featured a grueling showdown with the Bearcats coming from behind to add a win to the win column defeating William Jewell College 90-86.
Due to a plethora of team fouls to start, SBU saw themselves down by four points at the first media timeout in the game. The Bearcats and Cardinals fast pace play were showcased early on as SBU saw itself behind 24-25 at the 9:57 mark in the first half. A solid start from the long range shooter
Derrick Stewart (14 points) helped SBU stay ahead of William Jewell 38-35 with 4:33 left in the first half. The first half came to a close with the bearcats down one 47-48.
The Bearcats continued to claw and scratch to only see themselves down three with 14:57 remaining. The Bearcats closed the gap and tied it up half way through the second half at 70-70. In the end SBU was able to mount a late staged comeback and take down the Cardinals 90-86.
The SBU Bearcats had two players with double-doubles in tonight's win. Junior
Menas Stephens had 15 points with 11 rebounds and
Desi Barmore added 15 points and 10 rebounds.
Derrick Stewart and
Rashaad Brown-Peterson both had a team high 20 points for SBU, while
David Gabrovsek had 14 points in the victory. The Bearcats shot 49.2% from the field, 40.0% from beyond the arc, and 69.0% from the free throw line.
The Bearcats are back in action on the road Wednesday December 18, against Emporia State in a conference double header for the men and women basketball teams. The SBU women are set to tip off at 5:30 p.m. and the men will follow at 7:30 central standard time.
