Box Score Bolivar, Mo. - The Southwest Baptist University men's basketball team was shooting the ball well at Meyer Sports Center on Saturday evening, hitting 18 three's en route to a 96-89 victory over Arkansas Tech.
The Bearcats once again jumped out of the gate quickly, taking a 9-2 three and a half minutes into the contest. Arkansas Tech chipped away at the lead, and would go up 18-16 with 10:07 to go in the half. Arkansas Tech slowly built their lead to a game high 10 (28-18) before the Bearcats started to battle back. After three three's from Bearcat shooters, SBU was back within one at 30-29, but Arkansas Tech continued to hold a small lead. SBU tied the game up off of a dunk from
Desi Barmore with 1:40 to go in the half, and buckets by both teams sent the game into halftime tied 42-42.
In the second half SBU started off with an 11-2 run to push their lead to 9 (53-44) with 16:54 left in the contest. The Bearcats held steady, and increased their lead to 12 (67-55) with 12:13 left in the game, but Arkansas Tech wouldn't go away. The Wonder Boys would eventually come back and take a 71-70 lead, and the back-and-forth battle continued. Over the next minute and a half, the lead changed six times before the Bearcats went up for good off of a layup from
Desi Barmore (77-76) with 6:02 to go in the game. The Bearcats hit timely three's and held off any surge from the Wonder Boys as they claimed the 96-89 victory.
The Bearcats had a strong shooting performance, hitting 18 three's while shooting 50.0% from the floor and 51.4% from beyond the arc.
Desi Barmore led SBU with 24 points and 7 rebounds while
Preston Guiot added 21 points and 9 assists.
David Gabrovsek added 15 points and
Rashaad Brown-Peterson had 12 points to close out the Bearcats in double-figures.
SBU will return to action on Tuesday, November 12 to face the defending national champion Drury Panthers. Tip-off from the Meyer Sports Center is set for 7:30 p.m. (following the women's game which is set to tip at 5:30 p.m.) Tickets are still available for purchase through the SBU Ticket Office for $10.
