Bolivar, Mo. - The Bearcats are set to open up regular season play by hosting the SBU Classic on November 8-9 in Bolivar. The Bearcats will host Henderson State on Friday, and Arkansas Tech on Saturday, during opening weekend of the 2013-14 men's basketball season.
The Coaches and the All-Time Series
SBU head coach Jeff Guiot in his tenth season on the Bearcat bench, where he has won three MIAA regular season titles, and compiled a 166-101 (.622) record. Coach Guiot is the winningest coach in SBU history, has led the 'Cats to an MIAA Tournament appearance each season, and has three NCAA Tournament appearances.
Doug Nichols is in his third season as the head men's basketball coach at Henderson State. Nichols holds a career coaching record of 30-24 after going 14-13 last season.
Doug Karleskint enters his fourth season as the head men's basketball coach at Arkansas Tech with an overall record of 69-24. Karleskint has had a successful coaching career at ATU, leading them to the NCAA tournament two of the past three seasons.
SBU leads the all-time series against Henderson State 6-3, with SBU claiming their last match-up 117-77 during the 2009-10 season. SBU also leads the all-time series against Arkansas Tech 3-0, with SBU claiming their last match-up 70-69 during the 1989-90 season.
Scouting the Bearcats
The Bearcats return two starters off of last year's team.
Preston Guiot is the returning leading scorer, averaging 12.7 points per game and 6.5 assists per game last season.
Rashaad Brown-Peterson averaged 10.6 points per game and 3.7 rebounds per game, while
Jaywuan Hill averaged 6.1 points per game and 3.5 rebounds per game.
Scouting the Reddies
Last season Henderson State was 14-13 (9-11 GAC). Melvin Haynes is their top returning scorer, averaging 12.8 points per game last season, making a team high 81 three's.
Scouting the Wonder Boys
Last season Arkansas Tech was 18-12 (13-7 GAC) and was the GAC regular season co-champions. ATU returns GAC Defensive Player of the Year Charles Mells.
