SBU Women Derail the Undefeated Rockhurst Hawks 78-54

Bolivar, Mo. - Southwest Baptist went into battle Tuesday night in the Meyer Wellness Center against an undefeated Rockhurst team. The Bearcats defense started off strong while SBU jumped out to a 10-0 lead right out of the gates. The Bearcats held the advantage at the half 43-21 and continued the strong defense in the second half with 13 steals on the night to help the Bearcats take down the previously unbeaten Hawks 78-54.

The SBU Women took the lead early on and never looked back in a game that saw zero ties or lead changes. Starting off the game with another strong performance, Brook Duncan helped aid an SBU scoring raid that propelled the Bearcats to an early 20-5 lead halfway through the first half. The Bearcats continued to push and stretched the lead to 21 points (30-9) with 7:56 left in the half. The defense held its ground against a late half push from the Hawks going into the half up 43-21.

SBU started the second half steady matching the Rockhurst Hawks attack point for point through the first 5 minutes. As the game pressed on SBU began to steadily increase their lead and saw it rise to a game high of 29 points with 1:30 remaining in the second half.  The Bearcats maintained a double-digit lead the entire second half and increased its consecutive wins to 2 as they rolled to a 78-54 victory.

Senior Jacqui Zelenka led the Bearcat charge with a game high 18 points shooting 7-10 from the floor and 4-5 from the free throw line. Zelanka also had a game high 8 rebounds on the night. Sophomore Brook Duncan has maintained her solid shooting from the start of the year scoring 17 points tonight while freshman Mackenzie Skupa had a strong game shooting 6-7 with 2 free throws in route to a career high 14 points. The Bearcats forced the Hawks to commit 18 turnovers, while shooting 53.6% from the field, 30.8% from beyond the arc, and 63.6% from the free throw line.

The Bearcats are back in action on Friday, November 29 as they are headed south and will compete in the West Florida Thanksgiving Tournament in Pensacola, Florida. The SBU Women's first game is set to tip off at 12:00 p.m. CST against Montevallo.
