Rashaad Brown-Peterson led Southwest Baptist (2-2) as they claimed a 123-117 victory over Missouri S&T (2-2) on Tuesday night. Brown-Peterson tied the SBU single game scoring record with a career high 40 points in the victory.
The game, which saw a combined 240 points scored, started out slow as Missouri S&T took a 5-4 lead five minutes into the contest. After the Bearcats fell behind 17-10 with 13:10 to go in the first half, SBU started to fight back. The Bearcats would use a 10-1 run to go ahead 20-18 and would steadily pull away from Missouri S&T, taking a 58-34 lead into the break.
In the second half SBU extended their lead to a game high 28 at 76-48 with 13:52 to go in the game before Missouri S&T would start to mount a comeback. Missouri S&T would shoot 79% (11-14) over the next five minutes to cut the Bearcat lead to single digits at 86-78 with 8:53 left in the game. The Miners would trim the Bearcat lead down to three with 5:09 to go in the game, but SBU responded and sent their lead back to double figures before finally coming away with a 123-117 victory.
Rashaad Brown-Peterson led the way for SBU with 40 points off of 14-19 shooting from the field including 5-7 from beyond the arc.
Preston Guiot added 23 points, while going 15-20 from the free throw line, and
Desi Barmore also added 21 points.
Menas Stephens pulled down a career high 15 rebounds to go along with 8 points while
Derrick Stewart had 11 points.
During the game, 67 fouls were called and 97 total free throws were taken. As a team SBU shot 56.9% from the floor, 40.0% from beyond the arc, and 73.6% from the free throw line. The Bearcats dished out 26 assists, while forcing 17 Miner turnovers.
SBU quickly returns to action on Thursday, November 21 as they are set to host William Woods to close out their opening home stand. The game is set to tip at 7:00 p.m. from the Meyer Sports Center in Bolivar.
