Box Score Duluth, Minn. - The Bearcats were eliminated in the first round of the NCAA Tournament on Thursday afternoon, falling in penalty kicks against #22 Winona State after playing through regulation and two overtimes tied at 1-1.
Southwest Baptist was first to get on the scoreboard in the closing minutes of the first half.
Ali Skogrand knocked in her second goal of the postseason when she headed a corner kick from
Elin Hammar to put SBU up 1-0. Winona State responded with a goal from Devon Richards in the second half to tie the game up at 1-1.
The score would remain tied through regulation, and both overtimes, causing a shootout decided by penalty kicks to determine would who advance to the next round of the NCAA Tournament. The Bearcats and Warriors were tied 4-4 through the first five penalty kicks, forcing extra penalty kicks to determine the winner. After Southwest Baptist missed on their sixth penalty kick, Winona State knocked in their sixth to claim the penalty kicks victory.
The Bearcats finish their season with a 14-5-2 record while advancing to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since the 2004 season. The Bearcats 14 wins are the second most by any women's soccer team in the history of the program.
