Box Score Bolivar, Mo. - The Southwest Baptist University football team fell just short in a great match-up against Central Oklahoma on Saturday afternoon. The Bearcats and Bronchos played a close game, but SBU would end up falling 38-31 in the end.
The Bearcats got the scoring started first with an 85 yard touchdown drive on the opening drive of the game.
Joey Dominguez found
Nyran Ross up the middle for a 41 yard touchdown to put SBU up 7-0. Central Oklahoma responded with a drive of their own, tying the game up on a Josh Birmingham touchdown with 9:19 to go in the first. The Bearcats then added a 27 yard field goal from
Fernando Cedeno to go up 10-7 before UCO scored two straight touchdowns before the half, taking a 21-10 lead into the break.
The Bearcats quickly responded at the start of the third quarter. After forcing a UCO punt, the Bearcats made quick work of the Broncho defense. Anchored by a 51 yard rush by
ViaVia Manuma, and capped off by a 7 yard touchdown pass from Dominguez to Manuma, the Bearcats were back within four at 21-17. However, Central Oklahoma continued to respond, scoring two straight touchdowns by Birmingham to put UCO up 35-17.
SBU once again responded with a score of their own off of a Dominguez rushing touchdown, putting the Bearcats down 35-24. UCO added a field goal, and Dominguez hit Manuma with a 74 yard catch and run, but it wasn't enough as SBU fell 38-31.
Offensively
ViaVia Manuma collected 151 total yards of offense (52 rushing and 99 receiving), while
Joey Dominguez threw for for 258 yards and three touchdowns. Defensively,
Shaquille Shedd had a team high 9 tackles while
Derrick Fofanah added 8 tackles with 2 sacks.
The Bearcats will hit the road on Saturday, November 16 to face off against the Blue Tigers of Lincoln in their final game this season. Kickoff is set for 2:00 p.m. from Jefferson City, Missouri.
