Box Score Bolivar, Mo. - The Southwest Baptist University football team came up just short in a 28-14 loss to Nebraska-Kearney on Saturday afternoon.
The Bearcats fell behind early, giving up two first quarter rushing touchdowns to Nebraksa-Kearney as they headed into the second quarter down 14-0. The Bearcats responded with solid defensive play, forcing three UNK punts. With 1:37 to go in the first half, SBU began their first scoring drive on the day. SBU quarterback
Joey Dominguez hit
Zachary Sohn across the middle for a 29 yard pass, then a short pass to
Derwyn Lauderdale coupled with a UNK penalty gave SBU the ball on the UNK 20. SBU would score on the next play when Dominguez found
Evan Ray in the back corner of the endzone, as SBU went into the half down 14-7.
In the second half Nebraska-Kearney came out and scored two more rushing touchdowns to go up 28-7. The Bearcats continued to battle, forcing two fumbles in the final quarter. After a forced fumble from
Zach Moore, the Bearcats then drove 40 yards, capped off by a 14 yard touchdown pass from M.J. Swortwood to
Zachary Sohn to pull within 14 at 28-14. SBU had a couple of chances down the stretch, but couldn't capitalize off of defensive stops, as they fell 28-14.
Joey Dominguez and M.J. Swortwood split the quaterbacking duties, both throwing for a touchdown in loss. Sohn had 5 receptions for 83 yards and a score, while Lauderdale had a team high 8 receptions for 55 yards. On defensive,
Zach Moore had a team high 12 tackles with a forced fumble, while
Shaquille Shedd also had 12 tackles.
The Bearcats will hit the road on Saturday, November 2 when they travel to Northeastern State. Kickoff is set for 2:00 p.m. from Tahlequah, Oklahoma.
