Team Black has a Dramatic Comeback to Win SBU Baseball World Series

10/24/2013 10:33:00 AM

Bolivar, Mo. - The SBU baseball World Series ended Wednesday with a dramatic finish.  Team Black captained by Dalton Kelley trailed 6-2 with 2 outs in the top of the 7th and no one on base.  Six hitters later they found themselves leading 7-6.  After holding off a late rally in the bottom of the 7th they had won the series 2 games to 1.

Cory Borsh (JR, Omaha, NE) started for Bo Helsel's team and went three strong innings, allowing only one run on five hits.  He struck out four and walked one.  Sam Vergara (JR, Roseville, CA) started for Kelley's team and worked into the third.  After a four run bottom of the third for Helsel's team that was strengthened by singles by Zach Pirrello (SO, Liberty, MO) and Helsel (SR, Branson, MO) and a triple by Christian Binger (SO, Kansas City, MO) Helsel's team found themselves ahead 5-1.  After Kelley's team added a run on a RBI single by Austin Martin (FR, Camdenton, MO) in the top of the third Helsel's team tacked on an insurance run on a double by Spencer Blacksher (JR, Willard, MO) and a RBI single by Drew Miller (SR, Neosho, MO) to make the game 6-2.  That set the stage for the top of the 7th.  Trailing 6-2 with 2 outs and no one on, Josh Herrick (SR, Eureka, MO) and Cole Doherty (FR, Oak Grove, MO) both walked.  Zach Snodgrass (JR, Springfield, MO) singled home a run to make the score 6-3.  Ross Wolfe (JR, Nevada, MO) then singled to make the score 6-4.  Jake Vore (JR, Olathe, KS) followed with another hit to pull Kelley's team within 6-5.  That brought up Sander Bryan (SR, Salina, KS) who delivered the biggest hit of the series.  With two strikes he drove a ball in the right center field gap for a triple that plated two runs and gave his team the 7-6 lead.  Matt Dye (JR, Liberty, MO) who finished the 6th for Kelley's team would get the final three outs to earn the win.  But that would not come easily.  A two out two-base error put the tying run in scoring position and brought up the potential winning run.  But a comebacker to Dye sealed the victory and series for Kelley's team.

The game 3 concluded the fall practice schedule for the Bearcats.  They will return to action on Monday, February 17th at Dodson Field when they host the defending D2 National Runner Up Mankato State Mavericks at noon for a doubleheader.
