Box Score Hays, Kan. - The Southwest Baptist University football team fell to Fort Hays State on Saturday afternoon 56-14. The Bearcats now fall to 1-6 (1-5 MIAA) on the year while Fort Hays improves to 3-4 (2-4 MIAA).
Fort Hays was the first to strike, capitolizing off of an SBU turnover, to take a 7-0 lead. The Bearcats were quick to respond. After
Evan Ray forced a Tiger fumble, the Bearcats then drove 60 yards, capped off by a 6 yard touchdown pass from
Joey Dominguez to
Nehemiah Gross, to tie the game up at 7-7. Fort Hays would score on their next two 1st quarter possessions to go up 21-7, a mark that stood at the half.
In the second half,
Johnathan Drury picked up a Tiger fumble, and then returned the ball 47 yards to the Fort Hays 4 yardline. However, Fort Hays forced a fumble of their own on the 1 yard line, which they turned in 7 points, and increased their lead 28-7. The Bearcats once again found themselves in red zone two drives later, but penalties hurt the Bearcats as they were unable to put points on the board, and Fort Hays increased their lead to 35-7 after three quarters of play.
After a Fort Hays pick six,
Derwyn Lauderdale continued his strong season by hauling in a 53 yard touchdown reception from Dominguez to cut the lead to 42-14. However, Fort Hays would score two more touchdowns and claim a 56-14 victory over SBU.
Derwyn Lauderdale continued his strong season with 9 receptions for 113 yards and a score. From the quarterback position,
Joey Dominguez was 20-30 for 200 yards and two touchdowns. Defensively,
Shaquille Shedd once again led SBU in tackles, with 8, and
Evan Ray and
Nathaniel Belak both had forced fumbles.
SBU will return home to take on Nebraska-Kearney on Saturday, October 26. Kickoff is set for 1:00 p.m. from Plaster Stadium in Bolivar.
