Preston Guiot used a career high 26 points to help guide the SBU men's baksetball team to their first MIAA victory of the season with an 81-74 win over Lincoln. With the victory the Bearcats move to 3-9 (1-3 MIAA) on the season while the Blue Tigers drop to 2-12 (1-3 MIAA).
The Bearcats and Blue Tigers played a close one throughout, seeing 12 lead changes and 11 ties during the contest with neither team leading by more than seven points.
Jayon'e Troutman hit an opening jumper ten seconds into the game to put the Bearcats on top first at 2-0 before Lincoln responded with back-to-back scores to take a 2-4 lead which proved to be Lincoln's largest lead of the game. The contest continued to be tight throughout the remainder of the first half before SBU went on a 10-4 run to push their lead to seven (36-29) with 1:04 to go in the first half before taking a 36-31 lead heading into the break.
The Bearcats and Blue Tigers both came out of the locker room fighting, as lead changes continued throughout the second half. The Bearcats finally took the lead for good with 3:11 remaining in the contest when
Preston Guiot hit one of his five three's to put SBU up 68-67. The Bearcats extended their lead to six multiple times in the final minutes, holding off any Blue Tigers surge, as SBU went on to claim an 81-74 victory.
Preston Guiot led the way for the Bearcats with a career high 26 points, hitting five three's and going 7-7 from the free throw line, to go along with 6 assists and 4 rebounds.
Damion Hooks added 16 points,
Gilbert Gyamfi gave SBU 15 points, and
Rashaad Brown-Peterson chimed in 10 points and 7 boards in the victory. As a team SBU shot 45.0% from the field, 38.5% from beyond the arc, and 77.3% from the free throw line. The Bearcats out-rebounded the Blue Tigers 33-28 and forced 15 turnovers while collecting 9 steals.
The Bearcats return home on Tuesday, January 8 when they host the Hornets of Emporia State. Tip-off is set for 7:30 from the Meyer Sports Center in Bolivar.
