SBU Men's Basketball Begins Home Stand on Tuesday Against Northwest Missouri

Bolivar, Mo. - SBU returns home to face Northwest Missouri to start off a four game homestand. SBU is coming off of a 59-74 loss at Fort Hays and now sit at 5-10 (3-4 MIAA).

The Coaches and the All-Time Series
SBU head coach Jeff Guiot is in his ninth season on the Bearcat bench, where he has won three MIAA regular season titles and compiled a 162-91 (.640) record. Coach Guiot is the winningest coach in SBU history, has led the 'Cats to an MIAA Tournament appearance each season, and has three NCAA Tournament appearances.

Ben McCollum, who is primed to begin his fourth season at the helm of the Bearcats, helped guide his alma mater back to the postseason for the first time in three seasons. Not only did Northwest return to the MIAA tournament, it claimed the 12th MIAA Regular Season Championship in program history after finishing 15-5.

Northwest Missouri leads the all-time series against Southwest Baptist 34-19, with NWMSU claiming a 74-62 victory during the first round of the MIAA Post-Season Tournament last season.

Scouting the Bearcats
SBU returns home for four straight home games over the next two weeks. SBU is led in scoring by Preston Guiot who averages 11.5 ppg and 5.2 apg, while Damion Hooks averages 11.3 ppg while shooting 55.8% from the field. Gilbert Gyamfi and Rashaad Brown-Peterson both averages over eight points a game at 10.2 and 8.5 respectively.

Scouting the Bearcats
Northwest Missouri is coming off of a 71-57 victory at Central Oklahoma and now stand at 12-4 (5-2 MIAA). NWMSU relies on three players for a majority of their scoring. DeAngelo Hailey leads all Bearcats with 14.9 ppg, followed closely by Dillon Starzi who averages 14.4 ppg and a team high 5.2 rpg. Alex Sullivan is the other Bearcat in double-figures at 11.8 ppg, while Matt Wallace averages 5.6 assists per game.

Quick Facts
• SBU is one of only two teams in the MIAA to play all Division II schools prior to MIAA competition.

Preston Guiot tied the MIAA record for 3-Point FG Percentage in a game when he went 7-7 against Alaska-Fairbanks on 11/23.

Damion Hooks ranks 6th in the MIAA in Field Goal Percentage, shooting 55.8% on the year, while Gilbert Gyamfi ranks 14th, shooting 50.5%.

Preston Guiot ranks 4th in the MIAA in assists, dishing out 5.2 per game.

• Guiot also ranks 3rd in the MIAA in 3-Point FG made (2.3/G), 1st in Free Throw Percentage (88.6%), 10th in Assist/Turnover Ratio (1.7).

• As a team, SBU ranks 1st in 3-Point FG made (8.0/g), 4th in the MIAA in assists (14.4 apg), and 7th in Free Throw Percentage (71.4%).
