SBU Women's Basketball Comeback Bid Falls Short at #21 Fort Hays

Hays, Kan. - The Southwest Baptist University women's basketball team trailed by 17 at the half against #21 Fort Hays on Wednesday, but were able to cut the lead to five late in the game before falling 55-64 to the Lady Tigers. Jacqui Zelenka gave SBU her ninth double-double on the season in another tough loss for the Bearcats.

After the first score of the contest by Fort Hays, SBU scored seven straight points to jump out to a small lead at 7-2. Fort Hays would fight back and slowly build their lead, taking a 26-43 lead into halftime. The Bearcats however continued to battle, as they would come out of the break scoring the game's first seven points to cut the lead to 10 at 33-43. The Bearcats and the Lady Tigers continued to battle back and forth before SBU made a small run to cut the Lady Tigers lead to five (53-58) with 2:31 left in the game. The Bearcats were unable to gain a lead, and were forced to foul, as Fort Hays went on to a 55-64 victory.

Jacqui Zelenka continued her impressive season, giving SBU her ninth double-double on the year with 12 points and 11 rebounds. Brittney Dukes scored a team high 17 points, 5 rebounds, and 4 assists, while Chasity Prince added 11 points. As a team SBU shot 35.1% from the field, 35.3% from beyond the arc, and 81.8% from the free throw line. The Bearcats held the Lady Tigers to 21 second half points, and have yet to allow any team to shoot over 50% this season.

The Bearcats will return home on Tuesday, January 22 when they host Northwest Missouri. Tip-off against NWMSU is set for 5:30 p.m. in the Meyer Sports Center.
