Bolivar, Mo. - The SBU Bearcats are coming off of a 16-13 victory at Missouri Southern, their first win at MSSU in 9 years, and will look to continue their win streak at #20 Washburn on Saturday.
The Coaches and the All-Time Series
Keith Allen has already engineered a significant turnaround at SBU, moving the 'Cats from 0-11 his first year as interim coach, to 5-6 in 2008, to the winning record of 6-5 in 2009, another winning record of 7-4 in 2010, and completed a third consecutive winning season in 2011 with a 6-5 record. Allen served as defensive and recruiting coordinator before being named SBU head coach in 2007. His past coaching experience has included stops at San Jose State, Quincy, TCU and Oklahoma.
In ten seasons as the Ichabods' head coach, Craig Schurig has built one of the most respected programs in the MIAA with three NCAA playoff appearances and the 2005 MIAA title coming on the heel's of a 2007, 2009 and 2011 runner-up finish in the conference race. He has completed a 72-44 record at Washburn. The 72 wins are on top of the all-time wins chart at Washburn. Through his first ten seasons, in addition to three NCAA playoffs and a conference title, Schurig has led the Washburn football program to the 2004 Mineral Water Bowl Championship and the 2010 Kanza Bowl Championship.
Washburn leads the all-time series against Southwest Baptist 14-5. The Ichabods won the last match-up 56-23 in 2006 at WU.
Scouting the Ichabods
#20 Washburn is coming off of their first loss of the season, a 35-20 loss at Central Oklahoma last weekend. Washburn took down Nebraska-Kearney (24-14), Fort Hays (45-20), and Northeastern State (24-20) to start the season.
The Ichabods provide a balanced offense with Mitch Buhler leading the way in the passing game. Buhler averages 242.0 yards per game through the air with 9 touchdowns and 3 interceptions on the season. Matt Kobbeman is his leading receiver averaging 52.0 yards per game. On the ground WU has three rushers averaging over 34 yards per game, with Hayden Groves averaging 46.0 yards per game. Defensively Bryce Atagi leads the team with 32 tackles and 4.5 tackles for a loss.
