Joplin, Mo. - The Southwest Baptist University baseball team closed out the MIAA portion of their 2012 schedule on Saturday afternoon, dropping both games to the Lions 9-10 and 1-3.
In game one the Bearcats fell behind 6-0 after three innings before getting on the scoreboard in the top of the fourth. The Bearcats started off the inning with back-to-back singles from
Ross Wolfe and
Drew Miller. Wolfe came home a batter later on an rbi double from
Bo Helsel, while Miller came home on an rbi single from
Jeremiah Bryan to put SBU down 6-2. In the following inning the Bearcats exploded for five runs to take a 7-6 lead. With the bases loaded, Helsel came through with another rbi hit, singling to right field and plating two batters. The Bearcats added three more runs off of doubles from
Spencer Blacksher and
Jacob Estes to take a one run lead heading into the bottom of the fifth. Missouri Southern responded with three of their own runs, but SBU continued to battle. After a
Landon Young single, Wolfe brought him home with an rbi single to pull SBU within one. The Bearcats would tie the game up at 9-9 on an rbi single by Helsel later in the inning. The Bearcats were unable to come away with the victory, as Missouri Southern took game one 10-9.
In game two the Lions once again jumped out to an early lead, leading 1-0 after three innings. The Bearcats would eventually tie the game up at 1-1 in the sixth off of a sacrifice fly from Bryan, bringing home Blacksher. The Lions would respond, and take game two 3-1.
The Bearcats will close out their 2012 season at William Jewell College on Wednesday, May 9 when they take on the Cardinals. Opening pitch is set for 3:30 p.m. from Liberty, Missouri.
