St. Charles, Mo. - The Southwest Baptist University baseball team picked up their 20th win on the season with a 5-3 victory over Lindenwood on Tuesday night. The Bearcats had 13 hits and had a strong team pitching effort in the victory.
SBU was the first to get on the scoreboard when
Ross Wolfe hit an rbi single, bringing home
Spencer Blacksher, giving SBU a 1-0 lead after the first inning. Lindenwood tied the game up at 1-1 after two innings before SBU re-took the lead in the top of the fourth. With two outs in the top of the fourth
Brendon Cox had an rbi single followed by an rbi triple from
Landon Young to put SBU up 3-1. Lindenwood once again responded with two of their own runs to tie the game up at 3-3. SBU once again responded quickly, when
Brendon Cox hit an rbi double to put SBU back up 4-3. The Bearcats added another insurance run to take a 5-3 lead.
Jacob Sullinger closed out the Bearcats 20th win with a scoreless ninth inning as SBU went on to the 5-3 victory.
Mike Nielebeck,
Dustin Caplette, and Sullinger combined to throw nine innings, allowing only two earned runs, scattering seven hits, while striking out nine batters.
"That was a good effort," head coach
Chris Martin stated. "Our guys battled. We made some mistakes early but kept playing. We pitched it really well and played good defense. Hopefully that will be a staple of ours for a long time."
The Bearcats will close out the regular season this weekend when they travel to Missouri Southern for a four-game series spanning over two days. The Bearcats open up play on Friday, May 4 with opening pitch set for 3:00 p.m. from Joplin, Missouri.
