Rhiannon Mendez Hits Game-Winning Homerun at Truman State

Kirksville, Mo. - Rhiannon Mendez led the Bearcat offensive attack by hitting a pinch hit game winning two-run homerun at Truman State on Saturday afternoon. The Bearcats claimed a 6-4 game one victory and then fell 4-9 in game two.

In game one Southwest Baptist jumped out early on the Bulldogs in the top of the first inning. With the bases loaded and no outs, Jessica Colliver singled up the middle, bringing home Kassy Williamson and BreAnn Proctor to put SBU up 2-0. The Bearcats got another run off of an error by the Bulldogs, and put up a fourth run off of a sacrifice fly from Alandria Jensen, giving SBU a 4-0 lead. The Bulldogs would eventually shrink the lead, and tie the game up in the seventh, forcing extra innings. In the top of the eighth inning Rhiannon Mendez hit a pinch hit two-run homerun to put SBU up 6-4, taking game one.

In game two the Bearcats once again jumped out early, scoring a run in the first inning. After a leadoff double by Williamson, Atwood would eventually bring her home on a groundout, putting SBU up 1-0. Truman State would respond with three runs of their own in the bottom half of the inning, taking a 3-1. The Bearcats continued to fight when Alexa Harvey blasted a three-run homerun to centerfield in the top of the fourth inning, giving SBU a 4-3 lead. Truman State would go on to score six unanswered, taking a 9-4 game two victory.

The Bearcats will be back in action on Tuesday, April 10 when they travel to Russellville, Arkansas for a match-up against Arkansas Tech. First pitch of the double-header is set for 3:00 p.m.
