Kirksville, Mo. - The Southwest Baptist University baseball team played two tough ballgames against Truman State on Saturday, dropping the first game 0-1 and the second 7-8.
In game one
Cody Holzer threw an impressive game for the Bearcats, throwing a complete game allowing only one unearned run. Holzer struck out five Bulldogs, but the offense failed to provide Holzer any run support as the Bearcats dropped game one 1-0.
In the second game SBU came out scoring runs early.
Tyler Christophel and
Jeremiah Bryan led off the game with back-to-back singles with Christophel coming home off of an error by the Bulldogs. Later in the inning
Ross Wolfe came up to the plate with runners on second and third and doubled down the left field line to put SBU up 3-0. Truman State added two runs to pull within one before the Bearcat offense added more runs in the seventh. With runners on second and third,
Drew Miller hit an rbi single bringing home
Landon Young.
Bo Helsel then doubled to right field to bring home Bryan. The Bearcats were able to add two more runs off a passed ball and a fielding error to take a 7-2 lead going into the bottom of the seventh. However, the Bulldogs rallied for six runs in the seventh to go on to an 8-7 victory.
"It's my responsibility that we play well and are ready to play," head coach
Chris Martin stated. "I have to do a better job getting us ready to go. Credit Truman for battling all weekend. They are very well coached and are a good team."
The Bearcats will continue their road trip on Tuesday, April 10 when they travel to Warrensburg, Missouri to take on Central Missouri. First pitch of the double-header is set for 1:00 p.m.
