Bolivar, Mo. - The Southwest Baptist University baseball team had an excellent day at Dodson Field on Friday afternoon, sweeping the Blue Tigers of Lincoln 8-1 in game one and 10-2 in game two.
The Bearcats were backed by excellent pitching performances from Dustin Capplette and
Wes Burrell, giving up a combined one run, as the Bearcats move to 9-3-1 overall and 4-2 in the MIAA.
In the first game the Bearcats wasted no time getting on the scoreboard when
Drew Miller singled through the right side bringing home
Tyler Christophel. Pitching would be excellent for both teams over the next three innings before the Bearcats exploded for three runs in the bottom of the fifth inning. With two on and one out
Jeremiah Bryan tripled to left center, bringing home Christophel and
Cody Crutcher. Miller then brought home Bryan, followed by an rbi single by
Spencer Blacksher to put SBU up 5-0. Lincoln would get one in the sixth before SBU scored three of their own in the bottom half of the inning off of a bases clearing three-rbi double by Miller. SBU would go on to claim game one 8-1.
Dustin Capplette continued his dominant season for the Bearcats, throwing his third complete game of the season and moving to 3-0. Capplette threw 7.0 innings, allowing only one run while striking out three in the victory.
In game two the Bearcats offense continued to stroke the bat well. SBU jumped out early on the Blue Tigers once again, jumping out to a 1-0 lead in the first off of an rbi from Miller bringing home Christophel. The Bearcats added another run the third inning, and added 5 more in the fourth. With the bases loaded and one out,
Ross Wolfe hit a sacrifice fly to center, bringing home
Tadd Wagner.
Cody Crutcher then singled through the right side bringing home
Bo Helsel, followed by another rbi hit from
Landon Young. Bryan finished out the scoring effort in the fourth for the Bearcats when he singled to centerfield, bringing home Young, and giving SBU a 7-0 lead. The Bearcats added a run in the seventh off of another sacrifice fly from Wolfe, and two in the eighth off of an rbi double by Bryan, as the Bearcats went on to a 10-2 victory.
Wes Burrell threw an outstanding game for the Bearcats in game two, throwing 7.0 innings, allowing no runs while striking out six.
The Bearcats will be back in action tomorrow when they finish up the series with the Blue Tigers. First pitch is set for 12:00 p.m. from Dodson Field in Bolivar, Missouri.
