Bolivar, Mo. - The Southwest Baptist University baseball team continued their winning ways, pushing their win streak to 4 straight, after sweeping Central Methodist 15-6, 10-8 on Tuesday afternoon in Bolivar. The Bearcats had strong hitting performances up and down the lineup during both wins.
The Bearcats wasted no time in game one from getting on the scoreboard when
Drew Miller doubled to right center bringing home
Jeremiah Bryan to put the Bearcats up 1-0 after the first inning. Central Methodist responded in the top of the second with a run of their own, but SBU added 4 more in the bottom of the second. With the bases loaded,
Landon Young hit a sacrifice fly to right field, followed by a three-run homerun by
Tyler Christophel to put SBU up 5-1.
The Bearcats struck again in the bottom of the fourth inning. After a
Ross Wolfe single,
Cody Crutcher hit a double to centerfield, bringing home Wolfe. With two outs, Christophel then singled to center field, bringing home Crutcher, followed by rbi singles by Bryan, Miller, and
Spencer Blacksher to give SBU a 10-1 lead after four innings. The Bearcats added two more in the bottom of the fifth inning of off another Christophel home-run, his second of the day. The Bearcats added three more in the sixth off of rbi's from Crutcher and
Bo Helsel, as SBU went on to the 15-6 victory.
In game two, the Bearcats once again had excellent offensive production. Christophel led off the game with a single, and was eventually brought home off of an rbi double from Miller.
Brendon Cox then singled up the middle, plating Miller, to give SBU a 2-0 lead after one. Central Methodist added a rune in the second, but SBU got another run in the third when Miller once again doubled, bringing home Christophel. However, Central Methodist would continue to fight back, eventually taking a 5-4 lead heading into the bottom of the sixth inning. The Bearcats responded when
Landon Young hit a triple to right center, clearing the bases and putting SBU up 7-5. Christophel singled, bringing home Young, and Miller then blasted a two-run homerun to left center giving SBU a 10-5 lead. The Bearcats would hold their lead and go on to a 10-8 victory.
"That was a tough day to play," head coach
Chris Martin stated. "The guys really hung in there and battled. We played really well in game one, didn't in game two, but we kept battling. We have to get back to work tomorrow and get better. Winning is hard, but credit our guys for hanging in there and being tough."
Tyler Christophel and
Drew Miller led the offensive attack for the Bearcats. Christophel went 6 for 8, with 6 runs, 6 rbi's, and 2 homeruns, while Miller also went 6 for 8, with 3 runs, 6 rbi's, 1 homerun, and 4 doubles.
Landon Young had a nice day from the plate as well, going 3 for 6 with 3 runs and 4 rbi's.
The Bearcats return to MIAA action on Friday, March 9 when they host Lincoln University. First pitch for the double-header is set for 12:00 p.m. from Dodson Field in Bolivar.
