Bearcat Baseball Fights Hard Against #8 Emporia State

Bolivar, Mo. - The Southwest Baptist University baseball team had a tough match-up against #8 Emporia State on Friday afternoon, dropping the first game 2-9 and the second game 4-10. The Bearcats

In the first game Emporia State jumped out to an early 3-0 lead, but the Bearcats responded in the bottom half of the inning when Tyler Christophel scored on a rbi groundout by Drew Miller. The Bearcats put another run on the board in the bottom of the second inning off an rbi single by Landon Young plating Ross Wolfe. The Hornets would add runs in the third and fifth inning to go on to the 9-2 victory.

In game two Emporia State quickly took a 4-0 lead before the Bearcats got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the third inning. Miller had his second rbi of the day when he singled to left center bringing home Christophel. Emporia State would respond with more runsin the fourth before SBU would put another run on the board in the fifth, with Miller's third rbi of the day, once again bringing home Christophel. Emporia State would push their lead to 10-2 before SBU would score a couple of runs in the ninth inning. RBI's from Spencer Hopwood and William Swofford would pull SBU within six, but Emporia State went on to the 10-4 victory.

"Emporia State is a really good team," head coach Chris Martin commented. "They challenge you in ways a lot of teams can't. I thought our bullpen did a good job for us today. We have a lot of young guys and it's important for them to continue to get better."

The Bearcats will play another double-header against the Hornets tomorrow. First pitch is set for 12:00 p.m. from Dodson Field in Bolivar.
