Bolivar, Mo. - The Southwest Baptist University softball team completed their first sweep of the season on Tuesday afternoon, taking down the Rangers of UW-Parkside 7-2 in game one, and 5-4 in game two. The Bearcats collected 21 hits over the two games, while
Jessica Colliver picked up two more wins from the circle.
After a scoreless first inning for both clubs, the Bearcats opened up the first game in a big way, scoring 7 runs in the bottom of the second. The Bearcats strung together eight hits over the innings to give SBU a commanding 7-0 lead.
Taylor Atwood led the inning of with a double to right field, followed by a Colliver single down the left field line.
Rhiannon Mendez then hit a sacrifice fly, followed later by an
Autumn Lamle rbi double, putting SBU up 2-0. BreAnn proctor followed with an rbi single of her own before the Bearcats put another runner on base.
Alexa Harvey then blasted a three-run home run to centerfield, putting SBU up 6-0. Atwood finished the scoring for the Bearcats with her second hit of the inning, a single through the left side, to bring home
Stacie Davis and give SBU a 7-0 lead. Colliver took over for the remainder of the game, allowing only one earned run, en route to a 7-2 Bearcat victory. Colliver pitched strong from the circle, allowing only one earned run over 7.0 innings, picking up her 8th complete game on the season.
In game two the Rangers jumped out to an early 1-0 lead before the Bearcats responded in the bottom of the first. With runners on the corners, Atwood picked up another RBI, bringing home
Kassy Williamson. However, UW-Parkside would respond in the top of the second to regain the lead 2-1. SBU continued to fight, scoring two in the bottom of the third off of RBI's from
Hailey Turner and
Alex Abernathy to re-take the lead 3-2. The Bearcats added another run scored off of an error in the bottom of the fourth to take a 4-2, but UW-Parkside would tie the game up at 4. However the Bearcats came through in the bottom of the seventh with runners on second and third with one out,
Jennifer Martinez hit a ground ball to third where Colliver beat the throw home to come away with the 5-4 victory.
Colliver picked up two wins on the day, throwing a combined 9.2 innings, allowing only six hits and one earned run. Williamson was excellent from the plate, going 4 for 8, while Atwood went 4 for 6 and Harvey went 3 for 7.
The Bearcats will hit the road on Saturday, March 16 when they travel to Topeka, Kansas for a match-up with the Lady Blues of Washburn. Opening pitch of the double header is set for 2:00 p.m.
