LaKendra Smith Leads Bearcats with 24 Points and 9 Rebounds at #21 Emporia State

- The Southwest Baptist University women's team had a tough match-up against #21 Emporia State on the road, dropping the contest 70-57. LaKendra Smith had a solid performance down low for the Bearcats, scoring a game high 24 points.

The Hornets of Emporia State came out early against the Bearcats, building a double-digit lead during the first half, and taking a 40-28 lead into halftime. ESU continued to build upon their lead, pushing it to 19, before the Bearcats would start to battle back. SBU continued to fight hard the entire second half, pulling the game within 8 points, but Emporia State was able to hold on for a 70-57 victory.

LaKendra Smith was dominate down low for the Bearcats, scoring a game high 24 points off of 9 of 16 shooting from the field, while also pulling down 9 rebounds in the loss. Kayla Hruby had an excellent game from the guard position, scoring 10 points while also grabbing 4 rebounds. As a team, the Bearcats shot 42.9% from the field, 10.0% from beyond the arc, and 82.4% from the free throw line. The Bearcats were able to force 18 Hornet turnovers in the loss.

"LaKendra [Smith] had a great game for us," head coach Todd Voss stated. "Her production was very good, and I was proud of the way she played. Kayla [Hruby] has been playing very well for us, and she had a solid effort tonight. We still have room to grow, and we need to continue to fight and continue to get better."

The Bearcats will continue their road trip on Saturday, February 11 when they travel to #11 Washburn University for a match-up with the Lady Blues. Tip-off is set for 1:30 p.m.
