SBU Women's Basketball to Travel to #8 Washburn to Begin MIAA Play

Bolivar, Mo. - The Bearcats come into MIAA play on a 4 game winning streak as they are set to take on #8 Washburn in Topeka. The Bearcats are coming off of an 43-34 victory over Illinois-Springfield which ties the fewest points allowed by an SBU defense in the history of the program.

The Coaches and the All-Time Series
SBU head coach Todd Voss in his second season on the Bearcat bench. Coach Voss has compiled a 121-50 (.708) career coaching record (13-18 at SBU), and has made two NAIA Final Four appearances while as head coach. Coach Voss comes to SBU after spending 5 years as the assistant women's basketball coach at Drake University.

Fresh off his seventh MIAA regular season and tournament championships, head coach Ron McHenry will begin 2012-13 as his 13th season as the head coach of the Lady Blues. McHenry earned his 300th career win last year and sits at 319-65 (.831), spending all 12 of his years at Washburn. He's 145-37 (.797) in MIAA games and 159-18 (.898) coaching in Lee Arena.

Washburn leads the all-time series against the Bearcats 34-11, including an 82-45 and 75-49 victories over SBU last season.

Scouting the Bearcats
The Bearcats have won four straight and now sit at 4-1 on the season. SBU is led in scoring and rebounding by Jacqui Zelenka who averages 14.4 ppg and 9.2 rpg. Zelenka is coming off of back-to-back double-double games, the first of her career. Tanis Spani and Brook Duncan both come off of the bench for the Bearcats, averaging 10.6 ppg and 9.6 ppg respectively, while Morgan Lucy averages 7.4 ppg and 5.2 rpg down low.

Scouting the Lady Blues
Last season Washburn won both the MIAA regular season and MIAA tournament championships, and are currently ranked #8 in the nation after a 5-0 start. The Lady Blues are led in scoring by Tiara George who averages 17.2 ppg  and also pulls down a team high 8.8 rpg. The only other Lady Blue who averages double figures is Laura Kinderknecht, averaging 13.8 ppg, while Dana Elliott averages 5.0 apg.

• As a team, SBU ranks 9th in the NCAA (1st in the MIAA) for Scoring Defense, allowing 49.8 ppg.

• Zelenka was named the MIAA Women's Basketball Athlete of the Week for week four.

• The SBU defense shut down Illinois-Springfield, tying the school record for fewest points allowed during a game (34), a mark which leads the MIAA this season.

• Zelenka ranks 15th in the NCAA in FG Percentage (63.3%), Lansdown ranks 37th in the NCAA in Assist to Turnover Ratio (2.1), and Tanis Spani ranks 39th in the NCAA in Free Throw Percentage (90.0%).

• Zelenka ranks 10th in the MIAA in Scoring (14.4 ppg), 4th in Rebounding (9.2 rpg), and 6th in FG Percentage (63.3%).

• Leann Lansdown ranks 10th in the MIAA in Assists (3.4 apg) and 4th in Assist to Turnover Ratio (2.1).

Tanis Spani ranks 7th in the MIAA in Free Throw Percentage (90.0%) and Brook Duncan ranks 9th in the MIAA in Blocked Shots (1.4 bpg).
