Bolivar, Mo. - SBU will head to Riverside, California for a tournament hosted by California Baptist on December 17-18 as part of three straight non-conference match-ups for the Bearcats. SBU is coming off of a 75-71 victory over Central Oklahoma for their first MIAA win of the season.
The Coaches and the All-Time Series
SBU head coach Todd Voss in his second season on the Bearcat bench. Coach Voss has compiled a 122-51 (.708) career coaching record (14-19 at SBU), and has made two NAIA Final Four appearances while as head coach. Coach Voss comes to SBU after spending 5 years as the assistant women's basketball coach at Drake University.
Russ Davis is in his 17th season as Vanguard's head women's basketball coach. Davis won the NAIA National Championship in 2008, is a three-time NAIA Coach of the Year, and has a career record of 393-101.
Jarrod Olson begins his first season as head women's basketball coach at California Baptist. Olson's career record stands at 113-61.
SBU leads the all-time series against California Baptist 1-0, while this is the first meeting against Vanguard.
Scouting the Bearcats
The Bearcats bounced back nicely to defeat Central Oklahoma 75-71 for the final MIAA game of the 2012 calendar year. SBU is led in scoring and rebounding by
Jacqui Zelenka who averages 14.4 ppg and 10.0 rpg. Zelenka is coming off four straight games with double-digit rebounds, the first such stretch of her career. The Bearcats support a balanced offense with five different players averaging over nine points per game:
Chasity Prince (10.3),
Tanis Spani (9.7),
Brittney Dukes (9.4), and
Brook Duncan (9.0).
Scouting the Lions
Vanguard comes into the tournament ranked #3 in the NAIA with a record of 5-0. Nicole Ballestero leads the offense, averaging 20.2 ppg, while Esther Timmermans averages a double-double at 13.6 ppg and 12.6 rpg.
Scouting the Lancers
California Baptist is 6-1 coming into the tournament, riding a four game win streak.
CBU has five players scoring in double figures: Myriah Hicks (12.0 ppg), Brittney Lewis (10.9 ppg), Simone Holmes (10.8 ppg), Jasmine Beverly (10.6 ppg and 10.3 rpg), and Jasmine Sauser (10.3 ppg).
