Bolivar, Mo. - The Southwest Baptist University women's basketball team played an aggressive defensive battle against Illinois-Springfield in a 43-34 victory over the Prairie Stars. The Bearcats tied the school record for fewest points allowed in a game, allowing only 34 points to UIS. With the victory, SBU moves to 4-1 on the season.
The Bearcats never trailed against the Prairie Stars, taking an early 2-0 lead two minutes into the game off of a
Brittney Dukes layup. SBU built their lead up to six two different times before taking a 19-16 lead going into halftime. The defense continued to be strong for the Bearcats going into the second half, as SBU always kept UIS at an arm's distance away. The Bearcats held the Prairie Stars to two points during the last five minutes to help claim the 43-34 victory.
Jacqui Zelenka was once again dominant for the Bearcats, going 7 of 8 from the field for 17 points and a career high 14 rebounds.
Brittney Dukes was also solid for the Bearcats, hitting clutch shot after clutch shot to keep UIS from building any momentum as Dukes finished with 16 points.
As a team SBU shot 37.8% from the field, while holding UIS to 27.7% from the field. The Bearcats out-rebounded the Prairie Stars 39-26, while SBU forced 20 turnovers.
"When it mattered the most tonight, we were at our best," head coach Todd Voss stated after the victory. "Jacqui and Brittney really stood out tonight. They gave us what we needed. Jacqui had another really efficient night, shooting 7 of 8 from the field, 3 of 4 and I love the way she is rebounding the ball. We always say that when Jacqui is rebounding the ball she is at her best.
Brittney Dukes was also really big for us. She can do some special things for us on the court and hit some big shots down the stretch."
SBU will be back in action on Thursday, December 6 when they travel to #12 Washburn. Tip-off is set for 5:30 p.m. from Topeka, Kansas.
