Bolivar, Mo. - The Bearcats are set to host their second straight game when the Hornets of Harris-Stowe State come to play on Tuesday. The Bearcats are coming off of a 75-51 victory over Southern Arkansas.
The Coaches and the All-Time Series
SBU head coach Todd Voss in his second season on the Bearcat bench. Coach Voss has compiled a 119-50 career coaching record (11-18 at SBU), and has made two NAIA Final Four appearances while as head coach. Coach Voss comes to SBU after spending 5 years as the assistant women's basketball coach at Drake University.
Dennis Griffin is in his third season as head coach at HSSU after spending one season as an NCAA Division III assistant coach at Webster University. Griffin holds a career record of 10-51.
SBU leads the all-time series against the Hornets 4-0. The Bearcats and the Hornets last met in the 2007-08 season where SBU claimed a 79-67 victory.
Scouting the Bearcats
The Bearcats now sit at 2-1 on the season after winning two straight games.
Tanis Spani leads the Bearcats averaging 13.7 ppg while
Jacqui Zelenka averages 11.7 ppg and 6.3 rpg.
Morgan Lucy averages 9.3 ppg while
Brook Duncan averages 9.0 ppg.
SBU returns 5 players from last year's squad, including four starters.
Brittney Dukes led the Bearcats in scoring last season, averaging 13.6 points per game.
Jacqui Zelenka is the only other returner to average double-digits points last season at 10.9, while
Chasity Prince averaged 9.4 ppg shooting 51.4% from the field and 49.0% from beyond the arc.
Scouting the Hornets
Harris-Stowe State is currently riding a 5 game losing streak after opening up the season with a 98-86 win over Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College. The Hornets lost to MIAA members Lincoln (85-46) and Truman (88-42) in an exhibition tournament this past weekend.
Shanique Buford is the leading scorer and rebounder for the Hornets, averaging 17.8 ppg and 12.5 rpg. The other two Hornets scoring in double figures are Kayla Fisher (17.2 ppg) and Alexis Minner (11.3 ppg).
