Bolivar, Mo. - The Southwest Baptist University women's basketball team played a dominating game against Southern Arkansas on Tuesday evening, winning the contest 75-51. The Bearcats played every player on their bench and led by as many as 34 during the win.
The Bearcats came fast out of the gate, taking the first 10 points of the contest. The Bearcats continued to turn on the offense, leading by more than 10 for 34 of the 40 minutes in the contest. The Bearcats took a 36-20 lead into halftime and continued to grow the lead throughout the second half.
The Bearcats had a very spread out offense, with four players scoring in double figures in the win.
Jacqui Zelenka led the way for SBU with 16 points off of 8 of 11 shooting from the field and pulling down 7 rebounds.
Brook Duncan added 12 points,
Tanis Spani had 11 points and 7 rebounds, and
Morgan Lucy played an effective game down low with 10 points.
The Bearcats dominated the glass, pulling down 49 rebounds compared to the Muleriders 32, while
Ashlee Pitts led the team in rebounding with 9 boards while also adding 7 points. As a team SBU shot 44.4% from the field and 70.8% from the free throw line.
"It was important for us to get out to a good start," head coach Todd Voss stated after the victory. "Jacqui had a great game and I really liked her aggressiveness and her efficiency was really good. The fact that she is attacked inside is good because we need that inside presence. Jacqui can clearly shoot from the outside, but when she is aggressive it means good things for our team. When she is rebounding the ball, that is when Jacqui is at her best and she was really good tonight. Good things were happening when we went and inside and drove the basketball. We are a team that can shoot well from the three but it is good to see the inside game develop. Getting to the line 24 times is a good sign and that is by far the most we have been there in our three games."
The Bearcats will take Thanksgiving weekend off before returning to action on Tuesday, November 27 when they host Harris-Stowe State University. Tip-off is set for 7:00 p.m. from the Meyer Sports Center in Bolivar.
