Fayetteville, Ark. - The Southwest Baptist University Bearcats men's basketball team scored 50 second half points against Arkansas, but the Razorbacks took SBU's opening exhibition game 78-106.
After a slow start in the first half due to Arkansas' pressure defense, the Bearcats came out of the break more aggressive, taking the ball to the hole and putting up 50 second half points against their SEC opponent. The Bearcats were able to string together runs of 14-4 and 12-4 to stay even with the Razorbacks over the second half. SBU played all 13 players on the roster, with no single player playing over 21 points.
The Bearcats were led in scoring by
Gilbert Gyamfi with 12 points off of 4 of 5 shooting from the field, while also pulling down a team high 5 rebounds and dishing out a team high 4 assists. Returners
Preston Guiot and
Ricky Odige both added 11 points and a team high 4 assists in the contest.
As a team, the Bearcats shot 44.8% from the field, 32.3% from beyond the arc, and 88.9% from the free throw line. SBU collected 22 assists, forced 17 Razorback turnovers, and had 6 blocks in the contest.
"I was really impressed with what I saw tonight," head coach Jeff Guiot stated. "We need to work on our consistency, but the kids hearts are in the right place and all of the pieces are there. We will just work on getting better everyday."
The Bearcats quickly return to action on Saturday, November 3 when they travel to Des Moines, Iowa to take on Drake University. The game is set to begin at 7:00 p.m. from Knapp Center.
