Bolivar, Mo. - The Bearcats return home after a two game road trip to host Southern Arkansas in SBU's home opener. The Bearcats are coming off of a 65-59 victory over Rockhurst, and are looking to extend their win streak during a three game home stretch.
The Coaches and the All-Time Series
SBU head coach Todd Voss in his second season on the Bearcat bench. Coach Voss has compiled a 118-50 career coaching record (10-18 at SBU), and has made two NAIA Final Four appearances while as head coach. Coach Voss comes to SBU after spending 5 years as the assistant women's basketball coach at Drake University.
Carrie Slaton is in her third season as head coach of the Lady Mulerider basketball team, after having served four years as assistant coach.
SBU leads the all-time series against the Muleriders 3-0. The Bearcats won last years match-up at SAU 74-55.
Scouting the Bearcats
The Bearcats now sit at 1-1 on the season after a 65-59 victory over Rockhurst.
Tanis Spani leads the Bearcats averaging 15.0 ppg while
Jacqui Zelenka averages 9.5 ppg and
Morgan Lucy averages 9.0 ppg and 8.0 rpg. SBU returns 5 players from last year's squad, including four starters.
Brittney Dukes led the Bearcats in scoring last season, averaging 13.6 points per game.
Jacqui Zelenka is the only other returner to average double-digits points last season at 10.9, while
Chasity Prince averaged 9.4 ppg shooting 51.4% from the field and 49.0% from beyond the arc.
Scouting the Muleriders
Southern Arkansas has opened up the season 0-2 after losses to Texas A&M Commerce and LeMoyne-Owen. The Muleriders are led in scoring by Katherine McBride who averages 13.0 points per game while also pulling down 5.5 rebounds per game. Lauren Jay is the leading rebounder for SAU, grabbing 6.5 boards per game.
