Kearney, Neb. - The Southwest Baptist University football team lost to the Lopers of Nebraska-Kearney on Saturday morning, 20-34. The Bearcats forced six turnovers in the game, but weren't able to come away with the victory.
Nebraska-Kearney was the first to score a touchdown early in the 1st quarter to take a 6-0 lead before the Bearcats would respond. With 1:59 left in the first half, SBU quarterback
MJ Swortwood had a 6 yard touchdown run to put SBU up 7-6. The Bearcats were also the first to strike in the 3rd quarter when
ViaVia Manuma had a 1 yard touchdown run, putting SBU up 13-6.
Nebraska-Kearney responded with a score of their own to tie the game up at 13-13 before Manuma had his second rushing touchdown of the game, with 13:29 to go in the contest, giving the Bearcats a 20-13 lead. However Nebraska-Kearney would go to score 21 unanswered 4th quarter points to take the 34-20 victory.
On defense,
Jameson Manuma led the Bearcats with 10 tackles and one interception.
Derrick Fofanah also had one interception and also recovered a fumble in the Bearcats loss.
SBU will return home on Saturday, October 27 when they host Northeastern State. Kickoff is set for 1:00 p.m. from Plaster Stadium in Bolivar.
