Joplin, Mo. - The Southwest Baptist University Bearcats soccer team picked up their first win of the 2011 season, with a 2-1 victory over Missouri Southern State University on Thursday night. The Bearcats had a season high 17 shot attempts, with goals coming from
Kelly Isaac and Jade Barnden.
Missouri Southern jumped out to an early 1-0 lead after a goal within the first 15 seconds of the game. However, the Bearcats responded strongly when Isaac scored off a deflection off of the goalie on a free kick at the 28:28 mark to tie the game up at 1-1. It didn't take long for the Bearcats to score the go-ahead goal. At the 37:16 mark, Barnden kicked in a rebound off of a blocked
Ashley Creason shot to give the Bearcats a 2-1 lead. The defense buckled down for both teams, providing a scoreless second half, and a 2-1 Bearcat victory.
Both goals for the Bearcats were unassisted, and the Bearcats had a season high 17 shot attempts with a season high 7 on goal. Creason lead the Bearcats with six shot attempts, followed by Isaac and Marin Gelsheimer with three a piece.
The Bearcats will continue their road trip on Saturday, September 17 when they open up MIAA play with a game against Northwest Missouri State. The game is set to begin at 1:00 p.m.
