Bolivar, Mo. - The Southwest Baptist University Bearcat football team has announced the hiring of new offensive line coach, Mike Barela. Barela came to SBU from Texas State University where he coached tight-ends and was the Director of Football Operations for the past six years. Prior to coaching at Texas State University, Barela has coached at the University of North Texas, Sam Houston State University, and Morningside College.

“We had over 70 qualified applicants for our Offensive Line position this summer,” head football coach Keith Allen stated. “After an extensive interview process, we hit a homerun with the hiring of Mike Barela. Mike's coaching experiences at Texas State, North Texas and Sam Houston will definitely help our program on the field and in recruiting. He is a perfect fit for our staff based on his personality, faith and work ethic. Mike and his newlywed wife Lauren have already moved to Bolivar and are excited about the upcoming season.”

Barela is excited to begin his career as a Bearcat, and will look to continue to build upon the success the Bearcats have accomplished. ““I am excited to be here,” Barela commented. “I look forward to working with the coaches and players to continue to build upon the success they have built here. We will continue blue collar mentally along the offensive line, and continue to have fun along the way.”
