Maryville, Mo. - The Southwest Baptist Bearcats baseball team secured a split with the Bearcats of Northwest Missouri on Friday afternoon in Maryville. Starting pitcher Phillip Davolt was sensational against the Bearcats of Northwest, pitching a complete game victory for SBU in the second game of the double-header.
Davolt was on fire, scattering seven hits over nine innings, and giving up only two runs in the complete game victory for SBU. Northwest quickly got on the board in the bottom of the second innings, to lead SBU 1-0. However, SBU responded in the top half of the third inning, scoring two runs off of a Tyler Christophel triple to right center. Northwest scored another run in the bottom half of the inning, to tie the game up at 2-2. From that point forward Davolt locked down, giving up only two hits over the next six innings. The SBU offense didn't let the tie stand for long, responding in the top of fourth with a run resulting from a Brendon Cox single. SBU added three more runs in the seventh off of a Niko Saladis rbi single and two more rbi comming off of a double by Taylor Trotter. SBU cruised to a 6-2 victory in the second game of the double-header.
In game one of the double-header, the pitchers kept the offense in line, with the score remaining tied through the first three innings of play. However, Northwest scored six runs in the fourth, to break a 0-0 tie. Northwest added another run in the sixth to extend their lead to 7-0. SBU got one run back in the seventh off of an rbi single by Cox, but SBU fell short in the contest 7-1.
Through the first two games in a four game series, the Bearcats had four hitters with multiple hits, and four different Bearcats driving home runs.
SBU will play another double-header with the Bearcats tomorrow, Saturday April 9 in Maryville. Opening pitch is set for 1:00 p.m.
