Rhiannon Mendez continued her hot hitting against Missouri Southern today in Joplin, as the Bearcats closed out their 2011 season. Mendez her her second homerun in as many days, and knocked in two runs over the double-header, but SBU fell in both games.
In game one, Southern jumped out to an early 2-0 lead after two innings, but SBU would respond. In the top of the third inning, Mendez would blast a solo homerun to cut MSSU's lead to 2-1. SBU would continue to chip away at Southern's lead, and tie the game up in the top of the fourth inning off of an rbi single by
BreAnn Proctor. The Bearcats weren't done scoring, as they would add a third run in the top of the fifth inning when
Devon McNeal drew a bases loaded walk, giving SBU a 3-2 lead. However, Southern would score four unearned runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to come away with a 6-3 game one victory.
Karly Bitters pitched an excellent final game as a Bearcat, throwing a complete game allowing only two earned runs while striking out four batters.
In game two the Bearcats would jump out to an early 2-0 lead in the top of third inning off of an rbi single by
Jenna Niffen. However, Missouri Southern would respond in the bottom half of the inning and tie the game up at 2-2. Over the next three innings, Southern would add five more runs before SBU would score off of an rbi groundout by
Stacie Davis, as SBU would go on to lose game two, 7-3.
As a team, the Bearcats finished the year 7-27 and 4-18 in the MIAA.
