Bolivar, Mo. - The SBU Bearcats colleceted 25 hits against the Lions of Missouri Southern on Saturday afternoon in Bolivar. SBU scored 10 runs over the two games, and were lead in hitting by senior Paden Grubbs. Grubbs went five for eight between the two games, driving home six runs and scoring two of his own. Tyler Christophel also had an excellent day from the plate, going two for three with a run scored in game one of the double-header, and hitting a perfect four for four in game two.
In game one, SBU got off on the right foot when Grubbs singled up the middle to score Nigel Morton. Jacob Estes would then double to centerfield, plating Grubbs, and giving SBU a 2-0 lead. Missouri Southern would respond in the top of the second, scoring three runs and taking a 3-2 lead. However, the SBU offense wasn't done yet, as they scored two more runs in the bottom half of the third off of a double steal by Taylor Trotter and Grubbs, and an rbi single by Landon Young. SBU would add two more runs in the bottom of the fourth off a double by Grubbs, pushing SBU's lead to 6-3. Missouri Southern would fight back, scoring eight runs in the fifth, and two more in the seventh to secure a 13-6 game one victory.
In game two, Missouri Southern would be the first to strike, putting up three runs in the top of the first inning. However, SBU would respond with two of their own runs off of an rbi single by Grubbs. Missouri Southern would tack on seven more runs over the next three innings to take a 10-2 lead going into the bottom of fourth. SBU would get one of those runs back off of a Dominic Bouvier rbi single, but Southern would add three more runs in the next half inning to go up 13-3. However, SBU kept battling as Grubbs had an rbi single in the bottom of the fifth inning, but Missouri Southern came away with a 23-4 victory in seven innings.
SBU will continue their season on Tuesday, May 3 when they travel to Rolla, Missouri to take on Missouri S & T. Opening pitch for ballgame is set for 2:00 p.m.
