Pittsburg, Kansas - The SBU softball team battled Pittsburg State this afternoon in Pittsburg.
Rhiannon Mendez had an excellent day from the plate, hitting a homerun and a double, while driving in three runners.
In game one, SBU started things off right, when
Karly Bitters singled down the left field line, knocking home
Jenna Niffen to give SBU a 1-0 advantage. Pittsburg State wouldn't remain quiet for long, as they seven runs over the next two innings to take a 7-1 lead. Mendez then homered in the top of the third inning to pull SBU within five runs, but Pittsburg State added three more in the third, and two more in the fourth to win the game 12-2 in five innings.
In game two, SBU was once again first to strike as Mendez doubled to right field bringing home Niffen and
BreAnn Proctor to give SBU a 2-0 lead. Pittsburg State battled back in the bottom half of the inning, tying the score up at 2-2. However, SBU would find more offense in the top of the third off of rbi singles from
Sarah Brison and
Stacie Davis to give SBU it's second two run lead of the ballgame at 4-2. But once again Pittsburg State responded with two of their own runs in the bottom of third tying the game up at 4-4. Pittsburg State would go on to score eight more runs in the contest, and come away with a 12-4 victory.
The Bearcats are back in action again tomorrow as they travel to Joplin, Missouri to take on Missouri Southern State University. The double-header, scheduled to start at 2:00, are the final games for the Bearcats this season.
