Bolivar, Mo. - The SBU Bearcats had a dominating hitting performance in game two on Saturday afternoon against Truman State, powering past the Bulldogs 11-9. SBU collected 11 runs off of 14 hits in the contest, with five extra base hits.
The first three innings of game two looked to be a pitchers dual, with three total hits between the two ballclubs coming in the first three innings. However, SBU turned it on the bottom of the fourth to put some distance between themselves and the Bulldogs. Tyler Christophel lead off the inning for the Bearcats with a triple, and then was driven home by an rbi single by Paden Grubbs. SBU was able to string together four singles, and drive home three additional runs, with rbi's from Brendon Cox and Taylor Trotter. However, Truman responded in the top of the fifth by scoring five runs, and taking a 5-4 lead.
The lead for the Bulldogs wouldn't last long, as Paden Grubbs hit a two run homerun in the bottom half of the fifth, giving SBU a 6-5. SBU would once again string together hits after Grubbs' homerun, with Trotter knocking in another run, his third rbi on the day. Truman State battled back in the top of the sixth, scoring two more runs, and tying the game up a 7-7. But SBU would put away the Bulldogs for good in the bottom half of the inning. Grubbs doubled home Landen Young, Nigel Morton tripled bringing home Grubbs, followed by a sacrifice fly by Dominic Bouvier. Truman would threaten in the top of the ninth by scoring two more runs, but SBU ultimately came away with an 11-9 victory.
In game one, it was Truman State who hopped out to the early lead, leading 6-0 after two innings. Truman added a couple more runs in the fourth and sixth innings before SBU responded in the bottom of the seventh. Trotter lead the inning off with a walk, followed by an rbi double by Jacob Estes. Later in the inning Morton singled, bringing home Estes, but it wasn't enough as the Bearcats fell to the Bulldogs 8-2.
"We have been through a lot this week," head coach Sam Berg commented. "We had some guys go down with injuries, but I am proud of the way our guys kept battling. It was really good getting a win in the second game. I am proud of them for keeping their heads and playing hard. It was a full team effort."
