SBU Baseball Opens up Series Against Pitt State with a Win

Pittsburg, Kan. - The SBU Baseball team traveled to Pittsburg, Kansas on Friday to take on the Pittsburg State Gorillas. SBU saw excellent pitching performances by both Mike Nicks and Mike Nielebeck, as SBU came won it's first road conference game by defeating the Gorillas 4-3 in the opening game of the double-header.

Pittsburg State would be the first to strike in game one of the double-header, scoring two runs in the bottom of the first inning to go up 2-0. However, SBU was quick to respond with a rbi single by Tyler Christophel, evening the score up at 2-2. SBU would take the lead in the bottom of the third inning off of an rbi double by Paden Grubbs. The Gorillas would eventually tie the game up in the bottom of the fourth, but Brendon Cox would put the Bearcats ahead for good with an rbi single in the sixth inning, giving SBU a 4-3 victory. SBU starting pitcher, Mike Nicks, pitched a complete game allowing only 3 earned runs and five hits in the contest.

The second game of the double-header featured a pitching dual between the two ball clubs. SBU starting pitcher Mike Nielebeck had an excellent game, pitching 6 innings and allowing only one run off of five hits. The score remained tied 0-0 until the bottom of the fifth when Pittsburg State finally got on the scoreboard, and lead 1-0 in the game. They would add another run in the eighth before SBU would start to mount a comeback. Niko Saladis would add an rbi in the top of the ninth before Pitt State would escape with a 2-1 victory in the night cap. Saladis extended his hit streak to 14 games by going 1-4 in the first game, and 1-5 in the second game.

SBU will close out their series with the Gorillas on Saturday, March 26. Opening pitch of the double-header is set for 1:00 p.m.
