Springfield, Mo. - SBU Softball action resumed on Sunday after rain canceled the two games scheduled for the Bearcats on Saturday. The first game of the day for the Bearcats was against Truman State, followed by a 4:00 p.m. game against Northwest Missouri.
In the first game of the day for the Bearcats, Truman State came prepared to play. Truman State jumped out early, scoring a run in the first and two more in the third, and would eventually push their lead to 9-0 and defeated the Bearcats.
Karly Bitters contributed the Bearcats only hit in the first game, with an infield single in the seventh. Starting pitcher
Josie Rose pitched a complete game, giving up only four earned runs while striking out six.
In the second game for the SBU the Bearcats displayed discipline at the plate and timely hitting in the contest against Northwest Missouri. Bitters took the circle for the Bearcats in the second game and pitched extremely well. Bitters pitched a complete game allowing no earned runs and allowed only six hits. The Bearcats of Northwest put up three runs in the third inning and added another run in the sixth before SBU responded in the bottom half of the sixth.
Jenna Niffen contributed an rbi single in the bottom of the sixth shorten Northwest's lead to 4-1. In the bottom of the seventh, SBU went to work. Bitters and Rhianna Mendez opened up the inning with back to back singles, followed by a walk by
Autumn Lamle.
Andrea Jansen drew a bases load walk, to pull SBU to 4-2, followed by a fielder's choice by Proctor to cut the lead to 4-3. With the bases still loaded
Megan Myers singled to right field bringing home to runs and securing SBU's comback victory by the final score of 5-4. "It was nice to finally see a full team effort to win," head coach Christy Capner stated after the game.
Next up for the Bearcats is a trip to St. Louis, Missouri to take on Maryville University on Wednesday, March 23. Opening pitch is set for 2:00 p.m.
