SBU Men to Take on Missouri Southern in 1st Round of MIAA Tournament

The Coaches and the All-Time Series

SBU head coach Jeff Guiot continues in his seventh season on the Bearcat bench, where he has won three MIAA regular season titles, and compiled a 134-58 (.698) record. Coach Guiot has led the 'Cats to an MIAA Tournament appearance each season, and three NCAA Tournament appearnaces. Last season, SBU won 20 games for the third consecutive season, marking the first time in the history of the program the feat has been accomplished.

Entering his 22nd season as head coach at Missouri Southern, Robert Corn has guided the Lions to 17 Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association Tournament births, 12 in a row, and two trips to the NCAA Tournament.

The Lions lead the all-time series against the Bearcats 43-40. However, SBU has won 9 of the last 11 meetings, and are 10-4 against Missouri Southern in the Coach Guiot era.

Last Time Out for the Bearcats

The SBU Bearcats beat the Griffons of Missouri Western in dominate fashion, 98-78 and clinched an MIAA post-season tournament appearance in the process. With Nebraska-Omaha defeating Pittsburg State earlier in the day, SBU clinched the #8 seed in the tournament with their victory. “It was a great team effort,” head coach Jeff Guiot stated about the victory. “We shot well and we guarded well.”

The Bearcats were leading in scoring by senior Kurt Koenig who scored 21 points off of 8 of 11 shooting from the field. Koenig also pulled down 6 rebounds in the win. Senior Tomas Brock had a great last game at Meyer Sports Center, scoring 13 points and dishing out a season high 9 assists. Senior Tremaine Hill also contributed 7 points and grabbed 6 rebounds. “I'm really happy for the seniors,” coach Guiot commented.

To go along with the seniors' performances, sophomores Jacob French and Stephen Cotten both contributed 14 points in the victory.

As a team, the Bearcats shot 59.0% from the field, 54.8% from beyond the arc, and 90.0% from the stripe. The Bearcat bench outscored the Griffon bench 34-31.

Quick Hits

• As a team, SBU is ranked 2nd in the Nation for 3-point field goals made per game, averaging 11.0 per game.

• Junior guard Ryan Dougherty is the leading scorer for the Bearcats averaging 13.7 points per game, He also leads the Bearcats in field goal made (4.9 p/g), and total assists (85).

• Junior forward Robson Memnon along with sophomore forward Steven Cotten are the inside prescene for the Bearcats. The big men average a combined 15.7 points per game and 10.1 rebounds per game.

• Senior Kurt Koenig lead the Bearcats in scoring for the fourth consecutive game, posting 21 points in the win against Missouri Western.

• Freshman Lane Barlow, along with freshman Zach Kleine continue to make an impact for the Bearcats. The freshman duo average a combined 10.3 points per game.

• SBU is 12-16 overall and 9-13 in the conference. The Bearcats finished eighth in the MIAA standings, and average 80.1 points per game (5th in the MIAA).

Scouting the Lions

Missouri Southern is currently ranked first in the MIAA, with an overall record of 23-3 (19-3 MIAA). MSSU averages 82.5 points per game (2nd in the MIAA) with a field goal percentage of .512 (2nd in the MIAA). The Lions also average 35.7 rebounds per game (6th in the MIAA), 18.1 assists (3rd in the MIAA), and 9.8 steals per game (1st in the MIAA).

Junior guard Jason Adams is the Lions' leading scorer averaging 19.5 points per game. Adams also averages 3.1 assists per game, 5.8 rebounds per game, and averages a team high 14.5 field goal attempts per game.
