Topeka, Kan. - The SBU Bearcats baseball team opened up their road MIAA schedule today against Washburn University with an 8-3 victory in extra innings. Starting pitcher, Jared Berman, pitched a complete game giving up three runs on four hits in the win.
SBU was able to get on the scoreboard first in the second inning with an rbi single by Jacob Estes. SBU then scored two more in the third, one coming off an rbi single by Niko Saladis to give SBU a 3-0 lead. Washburn was able to respond in the fifth and sixth innnings, scoring one run in the fifth and two runs in the sixth. The game would remain tied through the seventh innings, forcing extra innings where SBU would take advantage. With two outs in the innings, SBU strung together multiple hits and scored five runs in the top half of the eighth. Landon Young, Nigel Morton, and Tyler Christophel all produced rbi hits, and helped propel SBU to an 8-3 victory.
In the second game of the double-header, SBU pitching was once again excellent. Starting pitcher Mike Nicks pitched six solid innings giving up only one run on two hits. Washburn would be this first to score in the second game, producing one run in the bottom half of the first. Nicks would only give up one more hit on the night for the Bearcats before being pulled before the top half of the seventh. SBU was able to tie up the ballgame in the top of the fifth off of an rbi double from Dominic Bouvier. Washburn would score one more run in the bottom half of the seventh, and secure a 2-1 victory in the second game of the double-header. Both Bouvier and Saladis were able to extend their hit streaks to 6 games after today's contests.
