SBU Women Host Emporia State

Bolivar, Mo. - After a tough battle against Washburn last Saturday (Feb. 5th) the Bearcat Women host Emporia State in hopes to break a tree game losing streak. The game can be found live on 99.9 KBFL, and streaming online at www.radiospringfield.com. A live webcast will be available as well, at www.AmericaOne.com.

The Coaches and the All-Time Series


SBU head coach J.C. Carter is in his third season on the Bearcat bench, where his teams have shown improvement each season. Last year's 10-18 mark was two games better than Carter's first year in Bolivar.

Jory Collins enters his first year as the Emporia State University women's basketball head coach. Collins has become the sixth head coach of the Lady Hornets basketball team on April 2010. Coach Collins has been a member of the lady Hornet coaching staff for nine seasons and ESU has advanced to the NCAA tournament in eight of those seasons.

Emporia State leads the all time series 11-27 against the SBU Bearcats.

Last Time Out For the Bearcats

The SBU women lost a hard fought battle against Truman this Saturday, 64-76 in Kirksville. The Bearcats were able to fight back a 15 point Bulldog advantage, cutting their lead to 2, but the Bulldogs were able to hold the Bearcats off for the final 4 minutes of the matchup and secure the victory.

For the second game in a row Southwest Baptist had multiple women score in double figures. the Bearcats were lead by junior LaKendra Smith who scored 15 points, grabbed 6 rebounds, and had 3 steals. Senior Ashleigh Gallio played a great game, playing a game high 40 minutes, while scoring 13 points, shooting 50% from beyond the arc, and pulling down 7 rebounds. Sophomore Kourtni Williams posted 14 points, and junior Jaquavia Couch contributed 11 points in the loss.

As a team, the Bearcats shot 40.4% (23-57) from the field and a perfect 100% (12-12) from the stripe. After the loss, the Bearcats fall to 7-12 overall, and 4-11 in the MIAA.

Quick Hits

• Lakendra Smith was the leader scorer for the SBU Bearcats agaisnt Truman State University last Saturday (Feb. 5th). Smith scored a total of 15 points, she also helped the Bearcats with six rebounds, and three steals.

• Koutni Williams scored a total of 14 points against the Bulldogs. The sophomore for Feyetville, Arkansas averages 8 points per game. Last Saturday against the Truman Bulldogs, Williams grabbed two rebounds and one assist.

• After leading the conference last year, Ashleigh Gallio continues to play a high number of minutes averaging 36.3 (2nd in MIAA) this season. Gallio leads the team in assists, (3.9/pg) as well. Gallio played 40 minute against Truman State scoring a total of 13 points. She also had five assists, and seven rebounds.

• Senior forward Whitney Malone is one of the front-runners for the MIAA All-Defense team. The senior from Attoka Tennessee averages 8 rebounds per game (5th in MIAA) and 2.3 steals per game (4th in MIAA). Last time, Malone had two steals and grabbed three rebounds.

• The Bearcat women have an overall record of 7-12 (4-11 MIAA). Offensively SBU averages 63.9 points per game (10th in MIAA). Defensively SBU conceives an average of 65.3 points per game (9th in MIAA).

Scouting the Lady Hornets

Coming from a three-game wining streak, #20 Emporia State has an overall record of 13-5 (12-4 MIAA). The Lady Hornets are second in the conference right behind Northwest Mo. State. They average 72.7 points per game and only conceive 64.3 points per game.

Alli Volkens averages 17.4 points per game (3rd in MIAA). The senior from Reinbeck, Iowa holds the first place in the conference for rebounds with an average of 11.8 per game. Last time for the Lady Hornets, Volkens scored a total of 6 points, grabbed 13 rebounds, had one assists and three blocks against the Mavericks of Nebraska-Omaha.
