Bearcat Women Travel to Truman

THE COACHES AND ALL-TIME SERIES
SBU head coach J.C. Carter is in his third season on the Bearcat bench, where his teams have shown improvement each season. Last year's 10-18 mark was two games better than Carter's first year in Bolivar.
Michael Smith begins his third season as the Truman women's basketball head coach in 2010 after being named the ninth head coach of the Truman women's basketball program in April of 2008. Smith previously served as an assistant coach at the University of Arkansas-Little Rock as well as head coach a Moberly Area Community College.

SBU holds a 29-14 edge in the all-time series against Truman.

LAST TIME OUT FOR THE BEARCATS


Bolivar, Mo. - The Southwest Baptist University women played a tough, back and forth battle with Pittsburg State, but lost 58-67 Thursday night in Bolivar.

The Bearcat women were lead by junior guard, Jaquavia Couch. Couch posted SBU's first double-double game Thursday night, scoring 17 points, on 8 of 13 shooting from the field, and pulling down a career high 10 rebounds. Couch also had 2 assists and 1 steal. 3 other Bearcat women scored in double figures: Jacqui Zelenka posted 15 points, Ashleigh Gallio scored 11 points, and Lakendra Smith contributed 10 points. “We had some good post touches in the first half tonight” head coach J.C. Carter stated after the game.

From the field, SBU shot 40.0%, forced 14 turnovers, and captured 8 steals. SBU dominated the paint, outscoring the Gorillas 34-14.

Coach Carter believes the season is long but over. “We are capable of putting a run together to get to the [MIAA] tournament,” he stated, “at times we play great basketball, and we have had some great games

QUICK HITS
•Guard Jaquavia Couch played 32 minute against the Pittsburg State Gorillas scoring a total of 17 points. The Junior from Saginaw Michigan also grabbed 10 rebounds, first Bearcat double-double of the season.

• Lakendra Smith scored 10 points against the Gorillas last Thursday (Feb. 3rd). Smith also had four rebounds, one assist, one steal, and one block against Pitt State.

• After leading the conference last year, Ashleigh Gallio continues to play a high number of minutes averaging 36.3 (2nd in MIAA) this season. Gallio leads the team in assists, (3.9/pg) as well. Gallio played 40 minute against Pittsburg State scoring a total of 11 points. She also had four assists, two steals, one block and three rebounds against the Gorillas.

• Senior forward Whitney Malone is one of the front-runners for the MIAA All-Defense team. The senior from Attoka Tennessee averages 8 rebounds per game (5th in MIAA) and 2.3 steals per game (4th in MIAA). Against the Gorillas, Malone scored five points, had one assist and grabbed seven rebounds.

• The Bearcat women have an overall record of 7-11 (4-10 MIAA). Offensively SBU averages 63.9 points per game (10th in MIAA). Defensively SBU conceives an average of 65.3 points per game (9th in MIAA).

Scouting the Bulldogs

Truman State University holds the ninth position in the MIAA standings. With an overall record of 8-10 (6-8) the Bulldogs average 61.3 points per game. Defensively Truman conceives 62.4 points per game (3rd in MIAA).

Breanna Daniels is the leading scorer for the Bulldogs with an average of 14 points per game. The junior from Ridgedale, Mo. also averages 4.1 rebounds per game. Last time for the Bulldogs (Jan 30th), Daniels scored 16 points, had one assists, two steals and grabbed 8 rebounds against Emporia State.
