SBU Women Travel to Northwest Missouri to take on #18 Bearcats

The Coaches and the All-Time Series


SBU head coach J.C. Carter is in his third season on the Bearcat bench, where his teams have shown improvement each season. Last year's 10-18 mark was two games better than Carter's first year in Bolivar.

Gene Steinmeyer has been coaching the NWMSU Bearcats for the past 12 seasons. Coach Steinmeyer has lead the Bercats to three NCAA tournaments in the last seven years. He has been tournament champion twice.

The Bearcats of Northwest Missouri State lead SBU in the all-time series, 27-21.

Last Time out for the Bearcats

The Southwest Baptist University Bearcats were defeated 64-78 this afternoon by the University of Nebraska at Omaha Mavericks. “I thought we did a good job of guarding in the post,” head coach J.C. Carter commented. A large part of the successful defense inside is credited to junior forward LaKendra Smith.

Smith had the best game of her career, scoring a career high 28 points and pulling down a career high 18 rebounds. “She played a great game,” head coach J.C. Carter stated after the game. “She's a bright spot for us down there. She played the whole game hard and I liked her attitude.” This is Smith's second consecutive double-double and third straight game of scoring in double figures. Smith also had two blocks, one steal, and one assist.

As a team SBU shot 41.1% from the field and 70.0% from the free throw line. SBU's bench outscored UNO's bench 16-12 in the loss.

• Junior forward Lakendra Smith posted her second straight double-double on the season, scoring 28 points and pulling down 18 rebounds against Nebraska-Omaha (Feb. 19) Smith had new career high's in points (28), rebounds (18), shots made (12), and blocks (2).

• Junior forward LaKendra Smith is the leading scorer for the Bearcats, averaging 10.0 points per game. Senior forward Whitney Malone is the Bearcats leading rebounder, averaging 7.4 rebounds per game.

• Freshman forward Jacqui Zelenka is shooting 53.8% from the field, ranking her 2nd in the MIAA.

• Senior guard Ashleigh Gallio is 2nd in the MIAA in minutes played per game, averaging 37.0 minutes, and 6th in the MIAA for assists per game (4.0).

• The Bearcat women have an overall record of 8-16 (5-15 MIAA). SBU averages 63.2 points per game (10th in MIAA).

Scouting the Bearcats


Northwest Missouri State University is currently ranked 1st in the conference, 18th in the nation, with an overall record of 21-3 (17-3 MIAA). The Bearcats average 80.2 points per game (1st in MIAA), while shooting 42.9% from the field (1st in MIAA). NWMSU averages 43.2 rebounds per game (2nd in MIAA) and 17.1 assits per game (1st in MIAA).

Senior guard, Gabby Curtis leads the Bearcats in scoring, averaging 18.3 points per game. Curtis also averages 4.4 rebounds per game and 3.1 assists per game. All five Bearcat starters average double-digits in points per game.
